Diamonds and Gemstones Guide

Lifetime service

When you purchase a diamond ring, you automatically become a member of the Abelstedt family. We offer ongoing service, including both care and repair, should anything happen to your ring. We also offer a full lifetime warranty. If the ring doesn't fit properly around your finger, we will adjust it to fit you perfectly.

And if you want a personal engraving? Don't worry. We will contact you after your purchase to find out what special engraving you would like. Free engraving is included with all gemstone rings.

White and colored sapphires

All Abelstedt sapphires come from Sri Lanka, which is home to and a community for sapphires in every conceivable color. Sapphires are an increasingly popular choice for engagement rings, but also for right-hand rings and cocktail rings.

Sapphire is a gemstone just like diamond, ruby (which is a red sapphire), and emerald. When you think of sapphire, you'll most likely think of a dark blue, royal gemstone. But sapphires come in a rainbow of colors, even white. White sapphires are among the most expensive and rarest of all sapphires. And some white sapphires can be more expensive than a white diamond if they are untreated.

Sapphire is made from the mineral corundum, which makes it a very hard, durable, and stable gemstone for everyday wear. Sapphire has a hardness of 9 out of 10 on the Mohs scale, where a diamond has a hardness of 10.

Sapphires are mostly heat-treated to improve both color and clarity, but also the general appearance.

Mining in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has a well-developed tradition for mining gemstones, especially sapphires. All our sapphires are mined by hand using traditional methods. Sri Lanka is widely recognized as one of the world's best sources for sapphires in all imaginable colors. All Abelstedt sapphires are very carefully selected, and each stone is unique.

No two sapphires are alike. Therefore, we examine each stone very carefully.

Abelstedt Diamonds

Almost all Abelstedt engagement rings and diamond rings are hand-set with small side diamonds. Each diamond is set with a steady hand to ensure that every tiny diamond is securely and safely placed on the ring.

At Abelstedt, we have high standards for quality, but also for personal and environmental reasons.

If you wish for a diamond instead of a sapphire in your ring, we are confident that we can fulfill your wish. If you desire a large diamond in the center, we only use GIA-certified diamonds to ensure you get the perfect diamond. Each center diamond comes with a GIA certificate.

Gold and White Gold

All Abelstedt diamond and sapphire rings are set in solid gold and white gold. You can choose between 10, 14, and 18 karat gold.
And all jewelry is engraved with the karat you choose. K stands for karat (not to be confused with carat, which is the weight we use to measure gemstones). It refers to the percentage of gold in an alloy. Let's illustrate: 24K gold is 100% pure, 18K contains 75% gold and 25% alloy metals, and 14K consists of 58% gold and 42% alloy metals.

Unsure of what to choose? Here are a few things to keep in mind:

The lower the gold karat, the harder the metal, as gold is a soft metal. 18 karat gold has a deeper yellow hue than 14 karat gold. And 14 karat white gold has a stronger white color than 18 karat white gold.

Due to the higher percentage of alloy metals, 10 karat and 14 karat gold are more resistant to wear and tear than 18 karat. And if you wish for platinum instead of gold, you can send us an email so we can fulfill all your wishes.
